How the MagicPlanner Capacity Index works
The MagicPlanner Capacity Index (MCI) is a 0–100 score of how crowded a Disney World park will feel on a given day. 0 means an empty park; 100 means shoulder-to-shoulder. Every prediction on this site, from the 13-month crowd calendar to the hourly wait forecasts, comes from this one model.
What goes into it
- Live wait times, every 5 minutes. We collect posted wait times for every attraction in all four parks around the clock during park hours. Wait times are the most honest crowd signal there is: better than attendance estimates or gate counts.
- A decade of history. Baseline crowd patterns built from historical data back to 2014: how each month, each day of the week, and each holiday typically behaves.
- School break calendars. US school district and university breaks are the single biggest driver of Disney crowds; the model tracks them explicitly.
- Disney's own signals. Park hours, ticketed events (parties shorten regular hours and shift crowds), and Lightning Lane pricing: when Disney charges more, they expect more people.
How it stays honest
Every hour, we compare what we predicted against the wait times that actually happened. Every night, a calibration pass adjusts each attraction's model based on those errors: per park, per season, per time of day. Attractions with more history get tighter predictions; new rides start conservative and sharpen as data accumulates. The whole loop is automatic: collect → predict → measure → recalibrate, every single day.
Reading the scale

What it isn't
MCI doesn't measure attendance: it measures how crowded the park feels, which is what actually matters for your day. A park can absorb a big crowd on a day with long hours and full ride capacity, or feel slammed at lower attendance when shows are dark. Wait times capture that; turnstile counts don't.
